MIRAMAR, Fla. — A 23-year-old Miramar man who told police he was “hearing voices and seeing things” is accused of killing his family’s dog and then discarding it in the trash, authorities said.
According to an arrest report, officers responded around 5 p.m. Thursday to a home near the 7600 block of Miramar Parkway after receiving a call about a suspicious incident.
A woman told Miramar police that when she returned home from work about 5:45 p.m., she could not find the family’s 10-year-old chihuahua mix, Lucy, according to the report.
When she asked her son, U-One Forever Smith, about the dog’s whereabouts, she said he told her he had killed the dog and put it in the trash, the report stated.
Police said his mother then checked the garbage can, found the dog’s body, and called 911.
Police said they found an item in the trash that they believe was used to kill the dog. The animal had four puncture wounds to its neck, according to the report.
Investigators said Smith later admitted to hearing voices and seeing things.
They also confirmed that he has a documented history of mental illness and was recently released after voluntarily committing himself under Florida’s Baker Act.
Jail records show Smith was also served a risk protection order in July that required him to surrender his guns.
Records show he was arrested on one count of causing cruel death, pain and suffering to an animal.
As of Friday evening, he remained held at the Broward Main Jail on a $50,000 bond.
