An emotional Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Friday evening that Deputy Devin Jaramillo was “brutally attacked and he was murdered” after responding to a traffic crash. Law enforcement sources characterized the killing as an “ambush.”

It happened in the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street, in the unincorporated Three Lakes area near Kendall and Florida’s Turnpike.

Good Samaritans called 911 after the shooting, Cordero-Stutz said.

Jaramillo, a former Coral Gables police officer, worked out of MDSO’s Kendall District.

The 27-year-old joined MDSO in 2024.

“Today is not OK,” Cordero-Stutz said during a news conference on Friday evening. “I ask our community to pray for the family of our fallen deputy, to pray for all of us, because we are family and we are hurting.”

Law enforcement sources said the deputy was shot in the neck during a scuffle.

Sources said that the suspect targeted Jaramillo in retaliation for a previous call.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava posted to X before Jaramillo’s death was announced, “I’m praying for the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy who was shot this afternoon in the line of duty. Our entire community stands with this brave officer, his family and fellow deputies, and all our men and women in uniform who put themselves at risk to protect our community.”

One suspect reportedly took his own life while another was reportedly in custody, those sources said.

There were multiple road closures in the area surrounding the scene and many people were still stuck in nearby businesses.
