MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Deputy Devin Jaramillo was 27 years old when he was fatally shot on Friday in the Kendall District.
Jaramillo earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and corrections from the University of Central Florida and interned with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“He was born in Baptist Hospital, graduated from Killian High School, and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Central Florida,” Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said on Saturday.
Jaramillo served as a police officer with the Coral Gables Police Department for nearly four years. After solving several theft cases, he received the police officer of the month award in July 2023.
“His dedication, courage, and commitment to our community will never be forgotten,” Coral Gables Chief Edward James Hudak wrote in a statement.
On Friday night, Cordero-Stutz announced Jaramillo, a May 2024 graduate of MDSO Lateral Class 6, had been “brutally attacked and murdered” while responding to a traffic crash.
Cordero Stutz said good Samaritans called 911, and despite all efforts to save his life, Jaramillo died at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
“Devin was an amazing officer, hard working ... He is what we call a legacy kid because his father was on the job for so many years,” Cordero-Stutz said. “He was strong, he was a helper, he was a supporter.”
Jaramillo had followed in the footsteps of his father, David Jaramillo, a retired MDSO detective who served as the president of the Hispanic Police Officers Association.
