MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A multi-million-dollar home owned by Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has been deemed an unsafe structure and remains blocked off under police watch.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the fire was reported just after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at the home along Davis Road in the county’s prestigious Ponce Davis neighborhood, which is situated between Coral Gables and Pinecrest.
Firefighters responded to the property, where heavy flames tore through the residence and threatened neighboring homes. Spoelstra returned as crews battled the blaze and watched as the house was destroyed.
Records show Spoelstra bought the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home two years ago for about $6.6 million. The 11,000-square-foot property included a backyard pool and a basketball court.
County documents indicate Spoelstra had recently completed major renovations, including replacing windows, doors and wall panels with impact-resistant materials, at a cost of about $250,000.
This past summer, permits were filed to replace the home’s concrete tile roof.
Video shows Spoelstra hosted his team at the home just two weeks ago for a gathering ahead of the NBA season.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office has sealed off the scene as investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.
