HIALEAH, Fla. — A new era is set to begin in Hialeah after the city elected Bryan Calvo as its next mayor.
He won Tuesday’s election in a landslide, receiving 52% of the vote and securing an outright win over his four challengers.
“Right now, we’re in the process of creating a government,” he said. “The time for campaigning has ended.”
Calvo campaigned on what he called “a new chapter for Hialeah,” promising to lower taxes and water fees, cut out lifelong pensions for elected officials and tackle corruption head-on.
But the new mayor will face tough challenges right away, including ongoing legal battles over water quality and billing.
Miami-Dade County has blamed the city for its pricing structure, something Calvo says he plans to address directly.
“We understand the way forward is to minimize the risk and the lost to city residents,” he said. “Obviously an $18 million loss would be devastating to city residents.”
Calvo has also called for ending taxpayer-funded pensions for city leaders, and it’s also worth noting that as Washington D.C. debates the future of Obamacare subsidies, Hialeah has one of the highest numbers of residents who depend on those extended benefits.
“I’m not a congressman, I wasn’t elected to be the next president,” said Calvo. “I’m here focused on these local issues. I don’t think the city should be bankrolling in any sort of extended subsidies.”
Calvo becomes Hialeah’s first newly elected mayor in five years, stepping into office with promises of change and a city watching closely to see what he does next.
