Troopers investigate fatal crash on Florida Turnpike that killed 2, injured 2

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a blue Honda was going south in the northbound lanes of the Turnpike and collided head-on into a silver Toyota.

A second crash occurred after the initial collision in which troopers said a white Toyota, which was also traveling the wrong way on the highway, crashed into the two disabled vehicles as well as an FHP vehicle that was at the scene.

According to authorities, the drivers of the blue Honda and silver Toyota that were involved in the initial crash were pronounced dead at the scene.

There were two people inside the white Toyota that was involved in the second crash, and they were both rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital with serious injuries, troopers said.

The trooper who was driving the FHP vehicle at the crash scene was not in his vehicle at the time of the second crash and did not suffer any injuries, authorities said.

All northbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed during the investigation, but have since reopened.

The investigation remains ongoing.
