Local officials in Miramar, Lauderhill collect donations for Jamaicans dealing with Hurricane Melissa’s fury

Yvette Colburne Yvette Colburne, the vice mayor of the city of Miramar, said on Monday that the city is accepting donations to help Jamaicans after Hurricane Melissa.

MIRAMAR, Fla. — Miramar and Lauderhill officials announced efforts to help Jamaicans who are preparing to deal with Hurricane Melissa’s fury.

Lauderhill officials encouraged residents to donate new sheets and blankets, non-perishable food, bottled water, tarps, solar-powered flashlights, first-aid kits, new sleeping bags, industrial sponges, new tarps, personal hygiene kits, and items for babies.

Miramar had a similar list, but also asked for generators, new trash bags, batteries, new work gloves, and tents, and asked that residents avoid donating used clothing or used linens.

“Many of our residents have family there, so the city ... is gearing up to provide support,” Yvette Colburne, the vice mayor of the city of Miramar, said on Monday.

Miramar and Lauderhill officials set up 12 drop-off locations, six in each city. Here is the list:

  • Miramar Fire Station 100 at 2800 SW 184 Ave.
  • Lauderhill City Hall at 5581 West Oakland Park Boulevard
  • Veterans Park at 7600 NW 50 St. in Lauderhill
  • John Mullins Park at 2000 NW 55 Ave. in Lauderhill
  • Westwind Park at 4550 NW 82 Ave. in Lauderhill
  • Lauderhill Historical Museum at 1080 NW 47 Ave.
  • Joy’s Roti Delight at 1205 NW 40 Ave. in Lauderhill
