DORAL, Fla. — Global Empowerment Mission is one of several organizations that jumps into action when a natural disaster is on the way.

Hurricane Melissa is expected to strengthen to a Category 5 hurricane this week that could bring serious risk to those in Jamaica.

This is why GEM’s Caribbean team, which is based in Kingston, is already in position to help before, during and after the storm hits.

Billy Richardson with GEM told Local 10’s Magdala Louissaint that on the ground here in South Florida, they’re looking for donations of essential items.

“Food, clothes, hygiene items, anything you think you’re going to need, socks, it’s all on that list, it’s all there for us to assist right away,” he said.

GEM says it’s sent aid to Haiti as well, which has already seen major impact from the storm.
