MIAMI — A family in Miami remains feeling anxious after someone broke into the bedroom of their 13-year-old daughter.
It happened around 4 a.m. Monday at a home near the intersection of Northwest 10th Avenue and 48th Street.
“Didn’t think that it was possible in this area, because everybody is working people, everybody is friendly, everybody sticks to their own,” said neighbor Allen Manns.
According to police, the intruder was wearing all black clothes and a black ski mask.
Police said he used a ladder or bench to access an unlocked window that he crawled through, gaining access to the girl’s bedroom.
“Our officers arrived on scene, (but) by the time they got to the scene, the subject was already gone,” said Miami Police Officer Michael Vega.
Authorities said the criminal stole the girl’s wallet and cellphone, but her mother told police she found the wallet nearby in the grass and was able to track the phone a few blocks away.
She told police that when she arrived, she took a photo of a man she says was holding the phone, and officers said they took that man in for questioning.
“This is the perfect time for everyone to check their homes, make sure that every window is locked,” said Vega. “Also, it’s important to have good lighting around your home. The lighting deters thieves or criminals from being seen.”
