MIAMI — Miami police are investigating after a person was shot multiple times in the Liberty City neighborhood late Monday morning.
According to the Miami Police Department, officers were at the scene in the area of Northwest 15th Avenue and 61st Street and had established a perimeter as they searched for a possible suspect, who was later detained.
A spokesperson for Miami Fire Rescue said that the victim was being taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
Miami police identified the shooting victim as a male, though they did not specify his age. He was shot in the neck.
Authorities said the shooting appeared to stem from some sort of a disturbance between two people.
One witness, who asked not to be identified, said a police officer helped save the victim’s life.
“We see him laying on the floor like he’s moving a bit. And then one of the female officers, she goes and applies pressure to his wounds,” the witness said. “And the main wounds, she was applying a lot of pressure to that one so he doesn’t lose blood as quick.”
The victim was talking and alert, the witness said.
The police activity led the nearby Charles R Drew K-8 Center to be put on “secure lockdown” status, according to Miami-Dade County Public Schools. It was lifted during the noon hour.
