MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A dog owned by Willie Loyd was shot and killed by a Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputy Saturday morning after it reportedly attacked a deputy during an investigation into a separate dog attack.
The incident occurred in the 2200 block of 64th Street in the Gladeview area after a pack of loose dogs, including Willie Loyd’s pet, attacked a woman walking with her 5-year-old child.
According to a neighborhood camera video, the chaos unfolded as a woman screamed for help during the attack. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene.
Loyd, who owns the dog named “Dot,” said he was inside his home when he heard the commotion.
“I just heard the noise, all kinds of stuff, and then I heard two gunshots,” he said.
Investigators said after the deputy arrived to investigate the initial dog attack, Loyd’s dog ran back toward the scene and allegedly lunged at the deputy. Fearing for their safety, the deputy fired at the dog.
Demetrio Davis, Loyd’s nephew, expressed frustration over the shooting.
“I understand if it was a bigger dog, like a pit bull or something more aggressive, but a small dog like that didn’t deserve to die,” Davis said. “He killed my uncle’s favorite dog.”
Loyd added that only one of the dogs involved in the attack, his own pet, was his responsibility. He and his nephew claimed that the others were strays, which Loyd occasionally fed when they came into his yard.
The woman involved in the attack was treated at the scene by medics but did not need to be taken to the hospital. Her child was unharmed.
The incident remains under investigation.
