LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives asked for the public’s help Thursday in identifying a man who they said is accused of attacking another man who was leaving a Lauderdale Lakes grocery store this past Saturday, leaving the victim in a coma.
The incident occurred shortly after 7:20 p.m. at the Aldi on 3301 North State Road 7.
Deputies said surveillance footage shows the suspect arguing with the victim inside the store before following him outside.
Seconds after the victim left with his service dog, video shows the suspect “sucker punching” him, causing the victim to fall backward and hit his head. Deputies said the victim “sustained significant and serious injures” and remains hospitalized.
“He’s a father, he’s a grandfather, he’s a brother, he’s a son, and everybody is just devastated,” the victim’s brother told Local 10 News. “And then to be put in a coma — it’s terrible.”
Detectives said the suspect fled the scene before deputies and paramedics arrived. Flyers with his image are now posted around the business and surrounding neighborhood as investigators continue their search.
“We’re going through it, but if somebody knows who this guy is — if they could come say who it is and call Crime Stoppers — and let us know who he is so somebody else doesn’t have to go through this nightmare,” the victim’s brother said.
