HIALEAH, Fla. — A Hialeah man was arrested Tuesday, months after his wife overdosed on cocaine, which he supplied to her, authorities said.
According to an arrest report from the Hialeah Police Department, officers were dispatched to the couple’s home in the 3500 block of West 89th Place just before 12:30 a.m. on May 28 in reference to a call about an unresponsive female.
When officers arrived, they made contact with the victim’s husband, Rafael Lujan, 37, who spoke with officers.
Police said he told officers that he had purchased cocaine for him and his wife to consume together, and later found her unresponsive in the bathroom. He then called 911.
According to the report, Hialeah Fire Rescue personnel transported the victim to Palmetto General Hospital.
Police said officers found a small plastic bag containing a white powdery substance at the couple’s home, which tested positive for cocaine.
Hospital staff drew blood from the victim when she arrived, and her blood also tested positive for cocaine, authorities said.
According to the report, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital on June 1.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her cause of death as acute combined drug toxicity from cocaine and ethanol.
Because Lujan purchased the cocaine and gave it to his wife, police arrested him on charges of first-degree murder from cocaine and possession of cocaine.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Lujan was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed his bond as “to be set.”
