MIAMI — A violent attack at a South Florida high school sent a 17-year-old girl to the hospital on Monday morning.
The student’s mother said her daughter, Arianda Sharpton, was beaten inside a bathroom at Miami Northwestern Senior High School at around 8 a.m. and had to be rushed to the emergency room for stitches.
The girl’s mother, Nicole Luster, said one of her biggest concerns is that her daughter suffers from epilepsy.
She also said she’s frustrated because no one from the school contacted her after the incident — and she had to come to the school herself to find out what happened.
“She said someone hit her in the head with a Stanley cup,” Luster said. “Then someone took a tuba, which is an instrument, and hit her in the head again. And she said when she knew anything, it was eight of them on top of her. Eight. It was eight girls who jumped her.”
Sharpton said she was standing up to a girl who was teasing her.
“And then she hit me with a Stanley cup in my head and then I got hit with a trumpet,” Sharpton said.
The mother shared a photo showing her daughter’s injuries.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Miami-Dade County Public Schools said in part that the district was “aware of a physical altercation that occurred earlier today involving students” from the school and that administrators and police “addressed the situation, resulting in an arrest.”
“Additionally, the students involved are being disciplined according to the Code of Student Conduct,” the spokesperson said.
Luster said she wasn’t aware an arrest had been made until Local 10 News informed her.
Her daughter is now home recovering, but Luster said she will not be returning to the school.
