According to Hialeah police Officer Oscar Roque, an officer was working an off-duty detail at the hospital when the MCT Express ambulance was stolen from the emergency entrance.

Roque told Local 10 News in an email Tuesday morning that the officer immediately began pursuing the stolen vehicle with assistance from other Homestead police officers.

Arturo Morejon.

The stolen ambulance was ultimately stopped in the 2500 block of Northeast Eighth Street, Roque confirmed.

He said the suspect, identified as Arturo Morejon, 47, of Miami, was taken into custody and transported back to the hospital for medical clearance.

According to an arrest report, Morejon had been treated at the hospital for hallucinations and was in the process of being transferred and admitted to a psychiatric facility when he abruptly left the hospital and stole the ambulance.

He was released later in the day and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a charge of grand theft of medical equipment.
