FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A man died after being shot at Fort Lauderdale Beach early Tuesday morning, police said.
Officers with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department said they responded to the 1400 block of North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard following reports of a shooting around 2:30 a.m.
While en route, police were advised that a white male possibly involved was walking in an unknown direction holding a black T-shirt.
Upon arrival, police said they found a car that had struck a seawall. Inside, they discovered a driver with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
Officers said they began providing medical aid before Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported the man to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
They said a subject matching the description provided was detained nearby and was later taken into custody.
A Local 10 News crew at the scene saw a heavily damaged car that had crashed into a concrete wall outside a condo building.
Detectives were also seen photographing another location further south on A1A, and portions of the sidewalk and roadway were blocked off during the investigation.
Neighbors described waking up to the commotion.
“Someone told me there was a shooting this morning. The sidewalk is closed off (and) there’s police action all over the place,” a Fort Lauderdale resident told Local 10 News.
Residents also reported hearing an argument before the gunfire.
“They were yelling and screaming at each other then gunshots,” neighbor Daniel Capen said. “The security guard in my building said she heard gunshots, saw people on the camera, and then one of the people involved came knocking on her window asking for keys to a car.”
The identities of the victim and suspected shooter weren’t immediately released.
