CORAL GABLES, Fla. — A 32-year-old man was arrested Thursday, months after he struck two women with his car as they were walking on a golf course in Coral Gables and then fled the scene, authorities said.
According to his arrest report, the hit-and-run crash occurred just before 6:20 a.m. on May 21 at a golf course in the 1500 block of North Greenway Drive.
Coral Gables police said Wilbert Cabrera-Valdes, of Hialeah, was driving a black Mercedes-Benz SUV west on the roadway as two women were walking west on the golf course.
Police said for unknown reasons, Cabrera-Valdes veered to the left against traffic, crossing the eastbound lane, and then exited the roadway before crashing into the victims.
He then fled the scene without reporting it to law enforcement or trying to help the victims, his arrest report stated.
According to the report, the victims were both transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center by Coral Gables Fire Rescue. They suffered multiple injuries, including fractures and traumatic brain injury, police said.
According to the report, a witness provided a description of the suspect to police and the SUV’s license plate number was captured on cameras in the area.
Police said cellphone data also shows Cabrera-Valdes was in the area at the time of the crash.
The SUV was located by Sunny Isles Beach police on Wednesday in a parking lot with damage throughout its body, including the front bumper/grill area, which is consistent with the damage expected due to the hit-and-run, authorities said.
Police said Cabrera-Valdes was arrested the following day at a Little Caesars in the 3700 block of West Flagler Street.
According to the arrest report, when detectives searched him, they found a clear glass pipe on him and two rocks of suspected cocaine hidden in his sock.
He was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious bodily injury, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia with the intent to use.
According to the report, Cabrera-Valdes invoked his right to remain silent.
As of Friday afternoon, Cabrera-Valdes was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed his bond as “to be set.”
