MONROE COUNTY, Fla. — Two detention deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were arrested Friday after investigators said they conspired to smuggle fentanyl into the Stock Island Detention Center.

Jail records show Deputy Alex Caminero, 38, is facing one count each of conspiracy to traffic fentanyl, attempted trafficking in fentanyl, unlawful compensation for official behavior, and using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony.

Investigators also confirmed that Deputy James Gregory Gardner, 52, is facing one count each of conspiracy to traffic fentanyl and smuggling contraband into a county detention facility.

MCSO spokesman Adam Linhardt said the arrests of both men stemmed from an investigation into a plan to bring about six grams of fentanyl into the jail.

Linhardt said both deputies were taken into custody and placed on administrative leave without pay while awaiting pre-termination hearings.

MCSO Sheriff Rick Ramsay said the department will continue to be transparent about such incidents.

“I remain committed to keeping the public informed of every important event that happens at the Sheriff’s Office — both positive and negative,” Ramsay said in a statement.

Their booking photos were not immediately available.
