Lauderhill seniors gather for monthly Tea Time to connect, access city resources

City of Lauderhill hosts monthly Tea Time for seniors to learn about programs and services Lauderhill city leadership invites its senior residents to come together for food and fellowship — and to potentially ease financial burdens.

LAUDERHILL, Fla. — This isn’t your normal cup of tea. It stands for time set aside To Engage Another.

The event happens the third Wednesday of every month for seniors, though Local 10 News was allowed in this morning to see what it’s all about.

Lauderhill city leadership invites its senior residents to come together for food and fellowship — and to potentially ease financial burdens.

“We just passed our budget and there are a lot of things in that budget that will impact our senior population,” said Denise Grant, mayor of Lauderhill.

The city’s mayor, attorney, fire chief, and finance director were on hand to speak about available resources and assist seniors with paperwork for programs such as the Senior Rebate Program and housing assistance.

“OK Felicia is standing there next to you and will speak to you and will resolve that for you immediately,” said a city official.

“If you’re a renter and you’re past due or facing eviction, we’ll be able to assist you,” said the head of grants.

Those in attendance said it’s not just a free meal — these events can be life-changing. Geraldine Scott, a Lauderhill resident who started attending Tea Time in December, said she learned about the city’s fitness programs.

“I started doing exercises and going to the gym so now I don’t have to use a cane anymore. I can walk and I don’t hurt,” Scott said. “I’m feeling really good just by coming here and being around the people and using the services that they provide.”

Grant says they’ll continue holding the event every month, but the city also stresses that senior activities are offered Monday through Thursday each week.
