MIAMI — Students at Kelsey L. Pharr Elementary in Miami-Dade County are doing their best every day and “cashing” in when it comes to showing off their positive attitude at school.

“Cougar Cash” is this school year’s incentive for students demonstrating a good attitude and improvements in core subjects.

Fifth grader, Jorge Hernandez, is doing his best every day and loves the new incentives.

“I really like that the cougar store has different games and sports balls. I don’t have to wait for someone to take me to the store to get these things, I can get them at school with my own cougar cash,” said Hernandez.

Students can earn cougar cash for:

  • Passing their assessments
  • Behaving well
  • Going above and beyond in their academics or behavior
  • Having perfect attendance
  • Helping a friend
  • Being student of the month
  • Doing the right thing
  • Exhibiting an MDCPS value (Respect, responsibility, etc.)
  • Passing I-Ready lessons

Each cougar cash is worth 1 dollar from any teacher or staff member. The leadership team also can give out $5 or $10 cougar cash.

Students can either save their cougar cash or spend it at the school’s biweekly cougar store.

Kelsey L. Pharr Elementary, located at 2000 NW 46 St in Miami, was voted the 2025 Values Matter Integrity School of the Year for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district.

It also earned its first “A” rating during the 2024-2025 school year.
