MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 47-year-old man who is employed by the city of South Miami was arrested Monday by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly raped a woman who was cleaning the building where he works, authorities said.
According to an arrest report, the alleged rape occurred around 10 a.m. Monday.
The exact location where the crime was reported was redacted from the publicly released report.
Deputies said the victim was cleaning a bathroom in the building when the suspect, Nelson Gomez, 47, entered with a knife and demanded that the victim perform oral sex on him.
The victim refused, but Gomez forced her against a wall and raped her, the report stated.
According to the report, he then left the bathroom and the victim called police.
When deputies arrived, they found a knife in the bathroom where the victim claimed the attack occurred, authorities said.
According to the report, Gomez denied having any physical altercation or dispute with the victim, but then requested an attorney when one of the law enforcement officials who responded to the scene identified themselves as a sexual crimes detective.
Gomez was arrested on a charge of armed sexual battery.
South Miami City Manager Genaro “Chip” Iglesias released a statement Tuesday that read in part, “The city is fully cooperating with law enforcement and treating this matter with the utmost seriousness. While the investigation is ongoing, the City will take all appropriate steps in accordance with the law and city policies.
“We remain committed to transparency and cooperation with law enforcement to ensure a thorough outcome. We understand any community concerns and share the seriousness with which they view this matter. We ask for the public’s understanding and patience as this process moves forward.”
A spokesperson for the city confirmed to Local 10 News that Gomez has been employed with the city since August of 2017.
“Effective today, he has been placed on Administrative Leave without pay,” the spokesperson said.
As of Tuesday morning, Gomez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond.
