MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities are investigating after a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office sergeant was involved in a shooting.
It happened on Tuesday at approximately 7:45 p.m. in the area of the 21600 block of Southwest 122nd Avenue.
According to deputies, witnesses called emergency services to report that a man was waving a gun around and at residents.
The man, who deputies identified Wednesday as Jose Pineda, Jr., 44, was inside a minivan when an MDSO sergeant arrived and ordered him to show his hands.
Deputies said Pineda did not listen to the orders which led to an exchange of gunfire in which the man was shot.
Fire rescue crews rushed Pineda to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to MDSO.
The sergeant, who is a 19-year veteran of the department, was not injured, nor were any civilians, deputies said.
“We’re very grateful to the community for making that very difficult 911 call,” Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said. “As difficult as this scene is, it could have been a lot worse. It was clear that this individual was intent on harming someone. In fact, shooting at our sergeant.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
