Authorities investigating deputy shooting in southwest Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities are investigating after a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting.

It happened on Tuesday at approximately 7:45 p.m. in the area of the 21600 block of Southwest 122nd Avenue.

According to deputies, witnesses called emergency services to report a man waiving a gun around and at residents.

The man was inside a car when a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office sergeant arrived and ordered the man to show his hands, authorities said.

Deputies said the man did not listen to the orders which led to an exchange of gunfire in which the man was shot.

Fire rescue crews rushed the man to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to MDSO.

Authorities have not identified the man, only saying he is a Latin male in his 40s with an extensive criminal history.

The sergeant, who is a 19-year veteran of the department, was not injured, deputies said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was observed at the scene, which is typical following a deputy shooting.
