MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A pickup truck crashed into a canal Friday morning in southwest Miami-Dade, and the driver has been airlifted to a local hospital, first responders confirmed to Local 10 News.
The crash occurred in the area of Southwest 157th Avenue and 264th Street.
A man who was working nearby told Local 10 News that the driver drove through a surrounding field before plunging the truck into the canal.
Another witness, Scotty Kmicayemitte, said a Miami-Dade deputy also witnessed the crash and jumped into action.
“I didn’t know what was going on,” Kmicayemitte said. “He just jumped out and sprinted. I thought they were chasing someone.”
“Just running over, just threw his hat off and dove in. I was just like, ‘wow,’” he added.
That deputy then pulled the victim from the water.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials, two divers searched the canal for any other people who were possibly in the vehicle, but no one else was located.
First responders said the driver was airlifted to the trauma center at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. The victim is listed in critical condition.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
