Deputies said they have been unable to reach next of kin for 63-year-old Gregory Hughes, who was struck and killed while riding his bicycle near Northwest 103rd Street and 12th Avenue in Miami just before midnight.

They said the deadly hit-and-run was captured on surveillance cameras at a nearby gas station.

Surveillance video shows Hughes, known by locals as “Grey,” leaving the station’s parking lot on his bike before turning the corner and continuing down the road.

A gray sedan then sped by, striking Hughes and leaving him in the roadway.

Another camera from across the street captured the moment of impact.

Deputies said they arrived minutes later to find Hughes unresponsive.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene, where a tarp was placed over his body. A single shoe was left behind in the street.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist was struck by a gray sedan, who then fled westbound on NW 103rd Street,” MDSO said in a statement. Investigators have not yet identified the make and model of the vehicle.

On Tuesday, deputies released a “seeking information” flyer as they urged the public to help not only find the driver, but also Hughes’ family.

Abid Molla, who owns the gas station where Hughes was last seen, described him as a familiar and kind presence in the neighborhood.

“Really, really nice guy,” Molla said. “He’s always here. Yesterday I seen him in the afternoon around 5 o’clock.”

Molla added that Hughes often offered to help around the property in exchange for cash.

“He just cleaned the stuff,” Molla said. “When he need some money, he just say, ‘Hey, give me 5 bucks, 10 bucks.’ I give it to him.”

Deputies said Hughes had just left the station when the sedan hit him around 11:55 p.m.

They said MDSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.

Anyone with information about the driver, the vehicle, or Hughes’ family members is urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
