FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The ongoing Air Canada flight attendant strike led to more cancellations at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport on Sunday.
Air Canada travelers are running out of options as the strike continues to ground flights.
A man waiting for his flight in Fort Lauderdale said his son was stranded in the Caribbean after a trip to Grenada. The son’s return flight to Toronto, scheduled for Monday, was canceled.
The airline issued a statement saying it is trying to rebook passengers on other carriers, but admitted it’s been difficult to find seats during the busy summer travel season.
The man said his son is hoping to return home soon, though the situation remains uncertain.
“I advised him to go to the airport tomorrow,” the man said. “I believe they’re still liable to find some way home for them.”
His son is one of an estimated 100,000 travelers affected by the cancellations.
“I told them to at least speak to an agent—try to get a hotel, some spending money, maybe a food voucher—but I’m hoping they can do that,” the man said. “Because if not, he will be stranded.”
Air Canada had planned to resume flights Sunday after the Canadian government ordered employees back to work. However, the union told members to ignore the order, resulting in more canceled flights.
The airline now says it plans to resume service Monday evening.
