MIAMI — A man was arrested Thursday night after he shot another man following an altercation that occurred during a youth boxing match at a gym in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, police said.
According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, the shooting occurred around 7:20 p.m. at the House of Pain boxing gym, located at 4940 NW Seventh Ave.
Police said the suspect, Boyise Eddie Denmark, 41, of West Park, was spotted right in front of the gym when officers arrived.
He was ordered to get on the ground and was detained. Police said they found a 9 mm handgun in his waistband.

According to the report, officers spoke to multiple witnesses at the scene who confirmed that children from the House of Pain gym were sparring against another gym called Lion Heart.
Police said Denmark apparently got upset because his son was sparring against who he believed was a bigger and older kid.
A witness told police that Denmark became “verbally aggressive” and used “inappropriate language,” so the victim interrupted him and asked him to “stop talking vulgarly in front of the kids.”
Another witness said Denmark was belittling the fighter from House of Pain, so the victim told him that if he didn’t respect the boxer, he needed to leave.
A verbal argument ensued but the two men eventually shook hands and the sparring session continued, witnesses said.
According to the report, during a third fight, the coach for the Lion Heart boxing gym got upset because he felt the opposing fighter was “not fighting fair.”
Police said the coach asked the opposing fighter to approach him and as he got close, the coach slapped the child on the head or face.
According to the report, members of the House of Pain boxing gym then approached the Lion Heart coach and a physical altercation ensued.
Police said the coach confirmed that after he struck the fighter, he was struck by multiple people and tripped to the floor.
According to the report, multiple people began fighting each other during the chaos.
During the melee, Denmark and the man he got into an argument with earlier met at the west side of the gym, at which time Denmark pulled out a gun and shot the victim, a witness told police. The witness said he heard about five gunshots.
Another witness said Denmark was the one who had approached the victim, and the victim told him, “You better not.”
Denmark responded, “I better not what?” and the two men then took a fighting stance, the witness said.
According to the report, Denmark flinched at the victim, which led to the victim throwing a punch at Denmark, but he missed. A witness said he then heard the sound of gunshots immediately after.
Police said Denmark provided a different story, claiming the victim approached him and punched him, at which time he retreated to the rear of the gym, but the victim followed.
According to the report, the victim was shot in the right arm, right thigh, right knee, right side of his abdomen and in the buttocks.
He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. His condition has not been released.
Denmark faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, using a firearm while committing a felony and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
As of Friday, Denmark was being held on no bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The judge ordered him to stay away from the victim and the House of Pain Gym.
According to court documents, Denmark is expected to see a judge again on Monday.
MPD spokeswoman Vanessa Morales confirmed that the Lion Heart coach accused of assaulting one of the fighters has not been arrested at this time.
