MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A teenage girl was strayed by a bullet early Wednesday morning while she was in her bed at an apartment complex in northwest Miami-Dade, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
According to deputies, the shooting was reported around 3:15 a.m. at a home in the area of Northwest 69th Avenue and 173rd Drive.
Deputies said the victim, identified as Yaramsi Robaina, 17, was grazed around her lower extremities.
“I was getting comfortable. Right when I get comfortable, it just — like it hits me and I hear it, I see it, and it’s like I’m in shock. So all I could do is react,” Yaramsi said while speaking exclusively with Local 10 News.
She said she initially didn’t realize she had been struck by a bullet until later.
Yaramsi showed Local 10’s Liane Morejon a large bruise where the bullet hit.
Investigators believe the bullet lost velocity as it entered through a window, preventing a more serious injury.
She and her family had been up late talking and enjoying what’s left of summer before she went to bed. Moments later, the gunfire erupted.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel treated her at the scene.
Noon report:
Her mother, Ismaray Barzaga, spoke through tears in Spanish, recalling the panic and disbelief:
“The only thing that was happening to me was shaking because I was nervous,” she said.
Yaramsi said the experience has changed her outlook on life.
“People need to start paying attention more in life and start figuring out what they wanna do because you could ruin someone else’s life,” she said.
Yaramsi says she is now focused on starting her senior year of high school — something she says she feels blessed to be able to do.
Detectives with MDSO’s Northwest General Investigations Unit are handling the case. Investigators confirmed that no arrests have been made and no suspect information has been released at this time.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
