FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 68-year-old Lauderhill man faces multiple felony charges after authorities say he attacked three family members with a broomstick and tried to hit them with his truck when they entered his yard while chasing after their dog.
William Wayne Graham was arrested on charges including three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated battery, according to jail records.
The incident occurred on Northwest Second Street in Fort Lauderdale when a 36-year-old mother, her 19-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old son crossed into a yard near the 180 block of Northwest 18th Terrace while pursuing their dog, police said.
Graham, who was sitting in front of the property, began arguing with the three victims about trespassing and threatened to kill them, authorities said.
Deputies said Graham initially threw punches at all three victims, who were able to back away.
They said he then retrieved a red broomstick from his 1997 white Ford pickup truck and struck the 19-year-old woman in the left arm.
After returning the broomstick to his truck, deputies said Graham once again threw punches at the women before retrieving the weapon a second time and striking the 19-year-old in the arm for a second time.
“I had blocked it because my brother was on the side of me so I had blocked my brother’s face,” the 19-year-old victim told Local 10 News.
The three victims fled across the street, but Graham backed up his truck and drove toward them in an apparent attempt to strike them with the vehicle, according to authorities. All three were able to escape without being hit by the truck.
Graham then drove west from the scene, authorities said.
Deputies said they located the white pickup truck and found a red broomstick matching the description of the weapon used in the attack.
The victims identified Graham as their attacker and said they wanted to press charges, according to an arrest report.
As of Friday he is being held on an $8,500 bond at the Broward Main Jail.
A judge also banned Graham from possessing any weapons, firearm or ammunition, ordered him to wear an ankle monitor, and prohibited him from having any contact with the victims.
