MIAMI — Support remains strong for a popular high school football coach who was suddenly removed from his role.
Dozens of alumni, staff and students from Miami Northwestern Senior High School held a rally in front of the school Thursday night.
Former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been the high school football coach for the past few seasons, even helping the team to earn a state championship last year.
But Bridgewater was recently suspended over accusations of handing out his own money to fund the basics for his players, things like Uber rides and physical therapy, which is against the guidelines of the Florida High School Athletic Association.
“We want him to be reinstated because the community, we don’t want him, we need him,” said Nay Akins. “He brings hope to the community. He builds up kids. It’s overall like the whole community is hurting behind this.”
The Miami-Dade School District said it is cooperating fully with the FHSAA and its priority remains the wellbeing and fair treatment of all student athletes.
