BISCAYNE PARK, Fla. — The man suspected of stabbing a mail carrier in the quiet suburb of Biscayne Park on Monday afternoon walked out of the village’s police headquarters Wednesday a free man.
The man, initially detained and then released, briefly spoke to Local 10 News after being questioned by investigators Wednesday. He claims he acted in self-defense after a traffic altercation with the longtime postal worker, identified as Eugene Mason, saying the mailman attacked him.

Police sources said the altercation happened while the man was on his scooter and Mason was in his mail truck and a fight ensued, leading to the stabbing.
“I stand my ground,” the man told Local 10 News reporter Rosh Lowe. “As Florida law provides.”
Mason was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, then subsequently released. Through his union, he has declined to speak with media outlets.
Shocked neighbors, who describe Mason as a beloved mailman, have set up a GoFundMe page to help with his expenses.
“It’s just absolutely devastating that this has happened so close and to someone (who) is just such a kind person,” Biscayne Park resident Lauren Fine said.
Biscayne Park police have turned the case over to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office for a determination on whether charges will be filed.
