BISCAYNE PARK, Fla. — Biscayne Park police said a mail carrier was in “good spirits” and released from the hospital Tuesday after being stabbed in the torso Monday afternoon.
They said they’ve also released a man initially taken into custody as a possible person of interest after questioning him. Authorities have not announced any subsequent arrests.
It happened just before 2:45 p.m. in the area of Northeast 117th Street and 10th Avenue.
Video showed the postal worker’s bloodied uniform shirt being taken in as evidence.
Shocked neighbors said Monday that the beloved mail carrier, identified by his union as Eugene Mason, has worked the route for more than a decade.
Stephon Walker, the president of the South Florida branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers, said Mason was “shocked that it happened, but he’s in good spirits.”
Walker said incidents like these are becoming all too common.
“Unfortunately, it’s something that’s happening quite a bit now, so we’re kind of used to having these types of issues,” he said.
Walker said postal workers are not allowed to carry weapons and are trained to defuse situations. He’s now advising his more than 5,000 members in South Florida to be extra vigilant until the attacker is caught.
“Just make sure you’re paying attention to your surroundings and, of course, you want to make sure to treat people how you want to be treated, because you never know what kind of a day the customer is having,” he said.
Authorities are describing the case as an “active investigation” between the Biscayne Park Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
