Miami Spice, Spa Months bring luxury dining and relaxation at a discount

MIAMI — From three-course dinners at top restaurants to luxury spa treatments at a fraction of the usual cost, Miami Spice and Miami Spa Months are officially in full swing — offering locals and visitors a chance to indulge without the guilt.

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau kicked off Miami Spice on Thursday, joining Spa Months, which began in July.

Together, the two-month promotion aims to boost summer business by spotlighting some of Miami’s best-known culinary and wellness destinations.

“We’re talking three-course meals at some of the hottest restaurants for as low as 35 dollars — and lavish spa treatments starting at 109 dollars," said Local 10’s Alexis Frazier on her Fresh Friday report.

The event gives chefs a chance to test new dishes and draw in diners during slower summer months.

“What we don’t want to do is just take a regular menu item and then include it in the Miami Spice program,” said Michael Schwartz, chef-owner of Michael’s Genuine in the Design District. “For us it’s a chance to try new dishes that eventually hit the menu anyway.”

One of those new dishes?

A coconut-fried local grouper with mango remoulade — “very Miami,” Schwartz said.

Over at Catch Miami Beach and Rosanegra, the focus is on flair and global fusion. Diners can enjoy upscale seafood, sushi and steak for just $60 during select days of the week.

But Miami Spice isn’t just about food.

The InterContinental Hotel in downtown Miami is among the many properties participating in both programs, offering spa treatments like Swedish massages, hot stone aromatherapy, and vitamin C facials at reduced prices.

“This is your destination for peace and relaxation,” said Caroline Wilmot, spa director at mySpa. “We have 10 spa treatment rooms, nail salons, hair salons, a beautiful pool ... so guests can come out and enjoy the day and make use of all the amenities.”

“Miami Spa Month is really our locals coming in to take advantage of these specials,” she added, “but hotel guests that are staying here, travelers, tourists ... it’s so well advertised.”

Restaurants and spas alike say these promotions help keep business steady during the slower summer season.

“It brings us business,” Schwartz said. “In the summer when there’s so many restaurants and so few people, people leave town ... it’s that opportunity to capture people’s interest and participate in a program that does a great job marketing.”

Miami Spice runs through the end of September, and Miami Spa Month continues through August.
