MIAMI — Give Miami Day is Thursday and it’s the biggest single-city giving day in the country, according to The Miami Foundation, which puts on the event each year.
The event is now 14 years strong, and tens of millions of dollars are donated to crucial organizations in the South Florida community to keep them going.
For the first time in the event’s history, loanDepot Park has been transformed into this year’s Give Miami Day “Mission Control,” bringing together hundreds of nonprofits, donors and community leaders to celebrate the magic city’s generosity.
Donations can be made until midnight Thursday and you can track how much money has been raised so far by clicking here.
Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, the CEO of The Miami Foundation, says they have more than 1,400 nonprofits to choose from, so find something you’re passionate about supporting and donate whatever you can.
“We’ve been doing this for 14 years and there are so many organizations in our community that step up for us all year-round. They’re educating and mentoring our kids, they’re cleaning our water so it’s safe for us to drink. And we need to step up for them,” Fishman Lipsey said.
“Today is Give Miami Day, where for 24 hours, we activate the community in giving. Through GiveMiamiDay.org, you’ll be able to find a nonprofit that is dear to your heart, or a cause,” said Julissa Rivera, the foundation’s community engagement manager. “We have 10 causes that we champion. And make sure that we lift them up for all the work that they do throughout the year.”
According to Fishman Lipsey, The Miami Foundation will match “dollars and prizes and bonuses.”
“And we’re trying to get everybody -- everybody who lives here, whatever your cause is, get out and give,” she said.
Local organizations like the WOW Center, which serves adults with developmental disabilities, benefit from the event.
“Give Miami Day is a way to really amplify our mission. This is an opportunity for our entire community to get to know a little organization like the WOW Center or other nonprofits,” said Arlene Peterson, executive director of the WOW Center. “The fact that it’s raising multiple millions of dollars, this is sometimes the greatest fundraiser that a small nonprofit can have.”
All throughout the day, a giant purple ticker is displayed on the stadium’s big screen, showing everyone a real-time look at how much money is being raised.
Last year’s Give Miami Day was the most successful one yet, raising nearly $40 million, and organizers are hoping to top that amount this year.
